Apple launches second-generation AirTag with louder speaker and improved range

Apple's AirTags first launched five years ago and brought the idea of tracking your possessions to the mainstream.

Now, the second-generation AirTag has been launched, improving everything while maintaining the same size and dimensions as the original.

The updated AirTag features Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which is the same one found in the iPhone 17 lineup and latest Apple Watches.

This enables Precision Finding from up to 50 per cent further away than before, using haptic, visual and audio feedback to guide you to your lost items.

For the first time, you can now use Precision Finding directly on Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, bringing that helpful directional arrow to your wrist without needing to pull out your iPhone.

The internal design has also been updated to make the new AirTag 50 per cent louder than the previous generation. Combined with a distinctive new chime, you can now hear your AirTag from up to twice as far away.

An upgraded Bluetooth chip also expands the range at which items can be located, making it easier to track down lost belongings even when they're further away.

The new AirTag integrates seamlessly with Share Item Location, an iOS feature that lets you temporarily and securely share your AirTag's location with trusted third parties.

This has proven particularly useful for lost luggage: Apple has partnered with over 50 airlines to accept Share Item Location links.

Like the original, the new AirTag maintains industry-leading privacy protections. It doesn't store location data or history on the device itself, and end-to-end encryption protects all communication with the Find My network.

The AirTag is designed exclusively for tracking objects (not people or pets), and includes cross-platform alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers to prevent unwanted tracking.

The new AirTag is built with 85 per cent recycled plastic in the enclosure, 100 per cent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 per cent recycled gold plating in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards. The packaging is 100 per cent fibre-based and easily recycled.

Because it maintains the same form factor as the original, all existing AirTag accessories will work with the new model.

The new AirTag is available to order now. Pricing remains unchanged from the original: $49 for a single AirTag and $165 for a four-pack, with free personalised engraving available.

The Apple-designed AirTag FineWoven Key Ring is available in Fox Orange, Midnight Purple, Navy, Moss and Black for $59.
