Droners will love the new DJI Mavic 4 Pro

DJI has just launched its latest pro-grade drone, the Mavic 4 Pro, with a triple camera system and 30km HD video transmission.

The new DJI Mavic 4 Pro drone can apparently transmit HD video over a distance of 30km. Thirty freakin' kilometres!

Ignoring things like interference and no fly zones, that means you could feasibly fly the drone from the top of the Sydney Tower Eye to the centre of the Liverpool CBD, enjoying a HD stream of footage as you flew.

That's insane!

Of course in reality you would never be able to do something like that in a populated area, and you'd need to be careful with your battery life so you don't lose your drone two dozen kilometres away. But the technology that enables that kind of distance is remarkably cool.

And that's just what the HD stream is capable of – the drone itself has a range of up to 41km, and can travel at speeds of up to 90 km/h.

Also impressive is the Mavic 4 Pro's triple camera array. DJI has been working with Hasselblad for years now, so it's no surprise that this drone features a new 100MP Hasselblad sensor, partnered with two tele lenses for an advanced triple camera system with 28mm, 70mm, and 168mm focal lengths.

All three cameras support 4K/60fps HDR video recording, but the Hasselblad main camera goes one step further, offering 6K/60fps HDR video and an impressive dynamic range of up to around 16 stops. The other two lenses aren't slouches though, capable of at least 13 stops, as well as either 120fps 4K slow motion or 100fps, depending on the lens.

All three cameras also feature 10-bit D-Log, D-Log M, and HLG colour profiles, so you know you're going to get gorgeous footage in all kinds of lighting environments, with deep rich colour and plenty of detail.

To help capture that footage, DJI has upgraded the gimbal, which now gives 360º rotation and 70º upwards shots.

“When we launched the previous model, this was the first drone with a triple camera combination allowing content creators to switch between shot composition with just one tap. The Mavic 4 Pro’s innovative 360° rotation Infinity Gimbal goes one step further and offers even more shooting options.  We’re really looking forward to seeing how people experiment with their shots and the cinematic possibilities that this opens up.”

– Ferdinand Wolf, Product Experience Director at DJI.

The Mavic 4 Pro has six low-light fisheye sensors for advanced obstacle avoidance, capable of achieving omni-directional obstacle avoidance at speeds up to 18 m/s, even in low-light.

Its processor even remembers flight paths when there's adequate lighting, so it can return home without GPS.

On the battery front, the 95Wh battery will give you up to 51 minutes of flight time, which can be charged in just 50 minutes with the Mavic 4 Pro Parallel Charging Hub. With three batteries inside, the hub also acts as a 100W power bank for charging your phone or laptop in an emergency.

The only real concern is that the standard version of the Mavic 4 Pro only offers 64GB of on-board storage, though the Creator Combo edition boosts that to 512GB. You can expand both with MicroSD cards though.
