Hey mate, can you help me out? LG just launched its LG SIGNATURE OLED T 77-inch transparent OLED TV in Australia, and I really want one. The catch is that it's just a tiny bit outside my budget.
You see, it's been priced at $74,999. $75K.
It's not the most expensive TV I've ever seen, but it's certainly up there.
But at least with this one, there's actually some impressive technology to justify that price tag.
What makes this TV worth more than my car?
Well, for starters, it's completely transparent when you want it to be. LG has managed to create a 77-inch OLED display that can disappear, letting you see straight through it like a window. When you're not watching anything, it just blends into your room, like Homer in a hedge.
This is possible thanks to LG's "Zero Connect Box", a separate unit that beams 4K video wirelessly to the screen at up to 120Hz, just like the OLED M5 that launched earlier this year.
You can switch between transparent and opaque modes depending on whether you want to watch the latest Netflix series or just let natural light flow through your room.
Living with a see-through TV
LG hasn't just made this thing transparent and called it a day. They've added some genuinely clever features that take advantage of the unique form factor. "T-Objet" mode turns your TV into an always-on digital art frame, while "T-Bar" gives you a subtle ticker along the bottom for weather, sports scores, or what's playing on Spotify - all without blocking the view behind it.
For gamers, it's packing NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Premium support, so you'll get smooth gameplay on that massive transparent canvas. Though at this price point, you're probably not using it primarily as a gaming monitor.
The reality check
$75K is pretty serious money. You could buy a decent car, put a deposit on a house (well, maybe not in Sydney), or travel the world for a year with that kind of cash.
But if you've got money to burn and want to own something genuinely futuristic that'll make every visitor to your home do a double-take, this is probably it.
The LG SIGNATURE OLED T is available now through LG's website, assuming your credit card doesn't spontaneously combust when you hit "add to cart."
