A lot of Aussie homes have a Wi-Fi blackspot out in the garden. It makes sense, right? Routers and mesh systems are designed for indoors, so it's always about how far the signal travels through your home's walls.
Until now. Amazon has launched the eero Outdoor 7 Wi-Fi device, specifically to help you get full speeds no matter where you are in your garden.
The eero Outdoor 7 is the first unit from the brand designed specifically to live in the elements. It carries an IP66 rating, which means it is completely dust-tight and can handle powerful jets of water, making it more than a match for a heavy Australian summer downpour.
We often see mesh systems struggle when trying to push a signal through thick brick or weatherboard walls to reach a patio or shed. This device solves that by offering up to 1,390 square metres of coverage from a single access point.
It supports the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard and can reach wireless speeds of up to 2.1 Gbps. That is plenty of bandwidth for streaming 4K sport by the barbecue or ensuring high-resolution security cameras remain stable at the edge of your property.
Company CEO Nick Weaver said the device was born from seeing customers trying to DIY their own solutions to get signal outside.
"Since we shipped our first systems in 2016, customers have wanted to expand their eero networks beyond their four walls," Weaver said, noting that some users had even resorted to strapping indoor units to poles with rubber bands.
The unit can be powered via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) if you have the cabling, or through an optional 30W outdoor power adapter that plugs into a standard AC outlet. It also functions as a smart home hub, supporting Thread, Zigbee, and Matter devices to keep your outdoor smart lights and sensors connected without needing extra bridges.
For those with particularly large properties, multiple units can be used to create point-to-point connections. This is a great way to bridge the gap between a main house and a detached garage, studio, or granny flat.
