There is an over-abundance of talent in the Australian tech and games media. For a market roughly 1/13th the size of the US, the quality of insightful writing, expert analysis and quality content around the topics of technology and games is really impressive.

I say this as somebody who has made a career writing within the industry. I am regularly jealous of the work produced by many of my "competitors".

As somebody who has been trying to make it running an independent tech publication, I know how hard it can be. I want to focus on shining a light on all the exceptional independent creators of tech and games media in Australia.

In this guide, I'm rounding up my favourite Australian creators with dedicated newsletters. There are plenty of Aussie website owners, YouTubers and social media creators you should also support, and I may round them up in separate guides.

My aim is to make this list as comprehensive as possible. I know I won't get everybody in the first version, so if I miss you (or your favourite tech newsletter creator), let me know and I'll add them in.

Best independent Australian tech newsletters

BTTR

ℹ️
Founded: 2022
Creator: Nick Broughall (Me!)
Focus: Tech and appliance news, reviews and features
Platform: Ghost
Price: Mostly free; Premium tier from $10/month

The model for BTTR has changed a few times since it began in late 2022, thanks to impact from Google's algorithm changes. Currently, BTTR delivers a weekly roundup of tech and appliance product news every Friday, plus 1-2 reviews and feature articles every week.

While most content is free, there's a paid subscription that offers extra insight and bonus content across all article types. Paid subscribers also get an ad-free experience.

The Sizzle

ℹ️
Founded: 2015
Creator: Anthony Agius; now run by Cam Wilson
Focus: Daily tech news and deals
Platform: Beehiiv
Price: $6/month; two week free trial

The Sizzle was doing tech newsletters before tech newsletters were cool. Founder Anthony "Decryption" Agius ran the newsletter for nine years before handing over the reigns to tech journo Cam Wilson early in 2025.

The Sizzle gives a daily roundup of technology news delivered directly to your inbox every weekday, with a distinct Australian flavour. You also get a pretty comprehensive roundup of tech deal highlights from the OzBargain forums.

Subscribers also get access to a dedicated Slack group and forum to discuss stories with other Sizzlers.

The Weekly Cybers

ℹ️
Founded: 2024
Creator: Stilgherrian
Focus: Digital and Cyber news
Platform: Buttondown
Price: Free, reader donations

Stilgherrian's Weekly Cybers newsletter is a more political look at the tech news of the week, with a decidedly Australian voice.

I typically try to avoid politics in my tech news, but Stilgherrian does a great job of breaking down the complexities of the Government's tech-related policy.

The newsletter is completely free, with the option of reader supported donations to support Stilgherrian's work, which also extends to podcasts and other general blogging.

Best independent Australian gaming newsletters

Infinite Lives

ℹ️
Founded: 2024
Creator: Harrison Polites
Focus: Gaming news, features and reviews
Platform: Substack
Price: Free, $5.50/month for archive access

Infinite Lives launched as a side project in 2024 as a way for founder Harrison Polites to write about his gaming passion.

With over 80 unique articles in the archive, Harrison recently turned on paid a paid subscription which places his archive behind a $5.50/month paywall, with the latest always launching free for subscribers.

With interviews, reviews and analysis of a variety of aspects of Australian gaming, Infinite Lives is an enjoyable read for anyone with even a cursory interest in gaming in Australia.

Press Any Button

ℹ️
Founded: 2022
Creator: Tim Biggs and Alice Clarke
Focus: Gaming news, features and reviews
Platform: Substack
Price: Free

Press Any Button combines the prowess of two excellent Australian tech and gaming writers, Tim Biggs and Alice Clarke.

Each week you'll get a breakdown of a topical issue, a roundup of games to play, a bit of an opinion piece, a board game story and a bit of retro gaming.

Everything is delivered with a friendly, accessible tone. I particularly appreciate the board game coverage, which frankly doesn't have enough of an Australian audience.

Multiplier

ℹ️
Founded: 2024
Creator: Fergus Halliday
Focus: Conversations on gaming in Australia
Platform: Substack
Price: Free

Multiplier is a different style of newsletter. Every issue is a conversation between Fergus and a variety of other writers about a particular issue in the Australian games community.

Because it is more a conversation and less an individual opinion, it delivers a finer level of insight into topical issues. That could be anything from the state of games journalism in Australia to deep diving into individual games or developers.

Currently delivered as a fortnightly newsletter, Multiplier is like listening to friends have a deep chat about the games they love. It's a great read.

Cottee's Gaming News

ℹ️
Founded: 2021
Creator: James Cottee
Focus: Conversations on gaming in Australia
Platform: Substack
Price: Free

James Cottee is an icon of the Australian gaming media. I worked with James 20 years ago at Derwent Howard, where he was key to the success of the publisher's gaming magazines. Today, he is publishing his own weekly news roundup.

Cottee's Gaming News regularly hits on stories you won't see in other roundup newsletters. Short and sharp, with James' superb wit, the newsletter also offers the occasional interview.

The newsletter is free, delivered on Fridays. It's a great-value addition to your weekly gaming news.

What have I missed?

I know there are a lot more excellent Australian newsletters out there in the tech and gaming space that I haven't come across yet. Part of that reason is that so many newsletters are locked into their own ecosystem.

My goal with this guide is to try and broaden my own awareness of local independent writers, as well as sharing their work to BTTR's audience. So if you have your own tech or gaming newsletter and want to be featured on this page, let me know. I'm eager to improve this page over time.
