Robot vacuums seems like a bit of a strange category shift for drone company DJI. But when you factor in all the sensors and obstacle avoidance software in drones, pivoting to home cleaning isn't too crazy at all.

The new ROMO series, consisting of the ROMO P, ROMO A, and ROMO S, brings millimetre-level obstacle sensing technology directly from DJI’s flagship drones into the home.

By leveraging dual fisheye vision sensors and solid-state LiDAR, these vacuums can identify and navigate around objects as thin as a 2mm charging cable.

DJI says the goal is to provide a truly hassle-free experience by combining these advanced sensors with smart algorithms and ultra-strong suction.

This deep environmental awareness allows the ROMO to map out efficient paths under furniture and around irregular objects without getting stuck or creating a mess.

Performance-wise, the ROMO delivers up to 25,000 Pascals of suction power, which is up there with many current market leaders. To ensure edge-to-edge cleaning, the device features dual flexible arms that automatically extend to reach into corners and along wall edges.

Maintenance has also been a major focus, with DJI claiming the all-round self-cleaning base station allows for up to 200 days of operation without user intervention, though this excludes emptying the dirty water tank.

The station handles everything else though, from washing the mop pads with high-pressure jets to emptying the waste and suppressing noise during the dust collection process.

The premium ROMO P model stands out with a unique industrial aesthetic, featuring transparent panels on the robot and base station to showcase the precision engineering inside.

It also includes a dedicated compartment for floor deodoriser, allowing it to refresh the home while it tackles kitchen grease.

Control is handled via the DJI Home app, which offers customisable cleaning plans, smart carpet identification, and even a remote check-in feature using the onboard cameras. Privacy is addressed through two-factor authentication and encrypted video transmission, with the option to disable the camera entirely.
