Google is giving kids access to its Gemini AI

At a time that the Australian Government is banning social media for kids under 16, Google is about to give kids access to its Gemini AI platform.

I don't agree with the Government's decision to ban social media for under 16 year olds. But I can appreciate the fact that even though the approach it has taken may be completely misguided, at least it's trying to do something about the damage big tech is having on society.

If any Australian politician had any credibility on the issue of protecting kids, it would be doing more to regulate big technology companies (or at the very least, taxing the crap out of them) so these companies were more inclined to do the right thing, rather than the most profitable thing.

There are countless examples of this, but today I'm going to focus on the email Google sent me through the parental Family Link service announcing that it is giving my kids access to its Gemini AI.

To be clear up front here – parents can turn off access to Gemini through Family Link. If you do use Family Link, go and turn off Gemini access now. They don't need that shit in their life – at least social media lets them connect with actual people.

To turn it off:
1. Head to
familylink.google.com
2. Select your child
3. Select "Controls"
4. Choose "Gemini"
5. Toggle that switch to Off - and don't look back!
