I've used the DJI Osmo Mobile 5 for years, but the new Osmo Mobile 7P looks like a worth upgrade
DJI has just launched the DJI Osmo Mobile 7 and Osmo Mobile 7P gimbals for your smartphone, adding some key advances to make this a worthy upgrade.

In a previous job I convinced the powers that be to buy each member of my team a DJI Osmo Mobile 5 gimbal to help create better photo and video for their product reviews. I use mine every week for BTTR.
But the Osmo Mobile 7 and Osmo Mobile 7P announced today look like they could be a worthwhile upgrade.
With integrated tripods and improved tracking, the new models look to have a lot to offer though neither natively solves my biggest gripe with the Osmo Mobile 5 (though there is an accessory that solves it now).
The key difference between the Osmo Mobile 7 and 7P is a new multi-functional module, which comes included with the 7P, but is an additional purchase if you opt for the 7.
The 7P also has a built in extension rod, which has been dropped from the Mobile 7 model this year.
This module is designed to help solve a lot of the challenges faced by using a mobile-phone gimbal. Most notably, it allows you to track the subject of your video using native camera apps, rather than needing DJI's MIMO app.
Not that DJI's MIMO app is bad. It's not. It works fine. But it doesn't allow for deeper control of newer smartphone cameras, like the iPhone 16 Pro Max's cinematic recording mode, for example.
The multifunctional module enables the gimbal to track a subject through a crowd, attaches to the gimbal with a simple magnetic clip, and lets you use hand gestures to start or stop both recording or tracking.
The Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal has also had an update. The three-axis stabiliser has been given a boost, weighs about 300 grams on its own and has a built-in tripod for effortless handsfree recording.
A side wheel offers more cinematic control, allowing for focal length adjustment and a smoother zoom.
The gimbal promises about 10 hours of battery life, and can be used as a power bank for your phone when not in use.
It all sounds pretty good, right? What I wish it offered, though, is magnetic attachment directly to MagSafe or Qi2 smartphones.

The clip attachment of the Osmo Mobile 5 is such a pain to attach and detach, and the Osmo Mobile 7 models use a similar grip to attach to your phone.
However, DJI has launched a $25 accessory that will allow you to quickly connect your MagSafe iPhone to the Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal. In my mind, it's a must-buy if you're considering getting the Osmo Mobile 7.
