Ninja NeverClog cold press juicer review: Fresh juice with minimum effort

Ninja's cold-press juicer does a great job of squeezing out the juice from your fruits and vegies without getting itself clogged.

The Ninja Neverclog setup ready to do some juicing

Pros

  • Simple to use
  • Dishwasher safe components
  • Not too loud, easy to store

Cons

  • Supplied jug spills easily
  • Extrusion can spit pulp over benchtop
  • Pulp filter lets seeds through

It’s a bold move to call your new cold-press juicer the ā€œNeverClogā€. You effectively guarantee that reviewers like me will be judging the performance of your product by its ability to not clog up with the pulp of the fruit you squeeze through its body.

Ninja’s cold-press juicer does a really good job on this front. It’s compact in size, easy to clean, and has two filter options that let you choose the pulpiness of you juice.

But does the NeverClog never clog? In the two months I’ve been testing it, I have found that with the fine mesh filter, it occasionally gets backed up with juice, but if you let the auger keep spinning it will eventually drain out.

But it’s hardly an issue for the juicer. There are a few things I would like to see improved, but on the whole this is a nice, compact appliance that gives you easy, fresh juice whenever you need it.

The Ninja NeverClog is a cold-press juicer that uses a slower, gentler process to squeeze the juice from your fruits and vegetables. Attaching to the main unit is a nine-segment auger that spins, pushing the pulp through a filter system so the juice comes out the bottom while the pulp comes out the side for easy disposal.

The NeverClog’s design means you can just keep on juicing until you turn the machine off. By using this approach, the juice you get is supposed to retain the natural flavours of ingredients without sacrificing the nutrients, enzymes and vitamins of your fruits and vegetables.

Core to the NeverClog is a choice of filter options – one with big holes to let through pulp, and one with tiny holes to keep your pulp out of your juice. After a couple of early tests, I decided I only really liked the pulp-free filter. But I’ll get into that a bit more later.

All the components, aside from the base, are dishwasher safe which makes cleaning up easy. Though, you still need to manually clean the filters to make sure you get rid of all the pulp.

The NeverClog weighs 3.6 kg, which I found easy enough to move around the kitchen to put the appliance in storage when I wasn’t using it. Unlike the Ninja Slushi, it was compact enough to pop into my cupboards without any real concerns.

What does the NeverClog do well?

NeverClog is its name, and juicing is its game.

Seriously, the NeverClog juices fruits and vegetables. It’s all it does. And it does it well.

Once you put the juicer together , it’s a simple matter of turning it on, placing your fruit and or vegetable into the chute and pushing it down to the auger.

As the auger spins, it breaks up and crushes your fruit or vegetable, pushing it further into the juicer to squeeze out the juice. There’s a cover over the hole the juice extracts from so you can seal it to prevent drips, and the pulp is squeezed out the side to fall into the supplied pulp bin.

You get the choice of pulpy or pulp-free filters, and as I mentioned before, I ended up using the pulp-free filter almost exclusively. I found the pulpy version’s holes too large, so juices ended up with not just pulp, but also seeds squeezed through.

That said, it’s also personal preference, and the fact you get a choice is nice here.

You get a 1 Litre jug with the NeverClog, which is enough for four small glasses of juice. I did always want more once I had finished drinking though.

The auger had no problem destroying harder vegetables like carrots and ginger, and managed well with things like watermelon as well.

Even with those harder vegetables, the juicer doesn’t get too loud – it’s not silent by any means, but it’s much quieter than my old centrifugal juicer, that’s for sure. It's just a lot squeakier, as the plastic components rub against eachother.

The pulp coming out of the Neverclog

What could the NeverClog improve?

As a single-purpose appliance, there wasn’t too much to complain about from the NeverClog’s performance.

But there were some things that bugged me.

For a start, the supplied juice jug has an inadequate lip for pouring the juice. If I filled it (which I did, weekly), the juice would adhere to the jug and spill everywhere. The jug’s shape meant I’m not able to tilt it fast enough to avoid this phenomenon when it is full to the 1 Litre mark.

The second issue is the pulp itself. The distance from the extrusion point to the pulp container is more than I would like. When the NeverClog was pushing out things like orange pith, it would spin around , flinging bits of pulp across the bench top.

Sure, most of it ended up in the pulp container. But I would invariably have to clean up scattered pulp after every juicing.

When it comes to cleaning, everything can go in the dishwasher, which is awesome, though the tiny holes on the filter do get blocked.

There’s a small, toothbrush-styled brush for cleaning these holes in the box, but it can be a bit of work. And nobody likes work, right?

Verdict

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of making a fresh juice for the family every weekend for the past couple of months. The NeverClog is easy to use and (mostly) easy to clean, which is all you can really ask for in a juicer.

Does it clog, though? Not really. While the system did occasionally get a little backed up with juice, it would eventually push it all out.

There are cheaper juicers on the market and more expensive ones. If you’re after compact appliance that delivers great juice every time, the NeverClog is a good option.
