It was only a few months ago that I was lauding the improvements Shokz had made with its OpenFit 2+ over the original OpenFit. In a year, the company had massively improved audio quality, drastically reduced audio leakage and somehow made the headphones more comfortable.
But now at CES, the company has announced the OpenFit Pro, and it's taking things even further with the addition of noise reduction technology, despite the open ear design.
The technology works through advanced acoustic modelling combined with a triple-microphone system and Shokz's ear adaptive algorithm.
Essentially, it predicts in-ear noise levels and reduces background noise in a way that's specifically tuned to each user.
The goal isn't complete isolation, which would defeat the purpose of open-ear design, but rather to moderate ambient noise enough to improve your listening experience.
Shokz says the feature performs best in moderate noise environments like gyms, cafΓ©s, or busy offices. In high-noise environments like trains or aeroplanes, the performance will be more limited, which makes sense given there's no physical seal blocking sound like traditional in-ear buds.
Beyond noise reduction, the OpenFit Pro packs some great audio improvements. The company's SuperBoost technology powers ultra-large 11 x 20mm drivers with dual diaphragms, delivering what Shokz promises will be rich detail, smooth highs, and deep lows.
OpenBass 2.0 handles the low end, while DirectPitch 3.0 reduces sound leakage for more privacy.
You'll get five preset EQ modes plus the ability to create two custom modes, and the earbuds are optimised for Dolby Atmos with head-tracking technology to keep you centred in the soundstage.
Comfort remains a priority, with Shokz's Ultra-Soft Silicone 2.0 and a titanium-enhanced frame designed for all-day wear without pressure. The earbuds are IP55-rated for sweat and water resistance, and battery life is impressive: up to 12 hours on a single charge, 50 hours total with the charging case, and four hours from a quick 10-minute charge.
The OpenFit Pro is available for pre-order now, and goes on sale properly from 22 January at Shokz.com.au, Amazon, and JB Hi-Fi. They'll come in black and white colours for an RRP of $399.
It's an interesting evolution for Shokz's open-ear technology. While $399 isn't cheap, the combination of noise reduction and all the other improvements could make the OpenFit Pro a compelling option for anyone who wants quality audio without completely cutting themselves off from the world around them.
