The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 want to feel your blood pumping (and tell you about it)

The new Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are designed for athletes, with an integrated monitor to track your heart rate during workouts.

I am not an overly athletic person, but I do love a good pair of headphones. So I'm still excited by the announcement of the Powerbeats Pro 2, even though I'm probably not the target audience.

Beats engineers reworked the earhook with the Powerbeats Pro 2, testing the new earbuds with nearly 1,000 athletes. Using a nickel-titanium alloy, the new earbuds are 20% lighter than the last generation, and offers a more secure, comfortable fit.

That's pretty good in itself, but where things get really quite impressive is the addition of a heart rate monitor sensor fro workouts. LED optical sensors pulse over 100 times every second to measure blood flow, with information able to be relayed to compatible fitness apps in real time.

The new Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are powered by the Apple H2 chip, which is also found in the AirPods 4 with ANC and the AirPods Pro 2. This offers seamless connectivity with Apple smartphones, though the Beats will also work with Android devices.

You get up to 45 hours of battery life with the case, and up to 10 hours of playback per charge for the earbuds themselves.

Audio is powered by a dual-layer 9.5mm driver, with support for spatial audio with active head tracking. There's also active noise cancellation, which will obviously impact battery life, but gives a more immersive audio experience.

Pricing and availability

The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are launching in four different colours: Jet Black, Quick Sand, Hyper Purple, and Electric Orange.

They will hit stores tomorrow, Feb 13, with an RRP of $399.95 in Australia.
