ASUS ROG Tessen controller review: Know when to fold ‘em
ASUS made the conscious decision to only support Android devices with the ROG Tessen, which makes it hard to recommend when there are plenty of superior cross-platform controllers available.

The beauty of the ASUS ROG Tessen is that it is designed for portability. Where most of the best gaming controllers have a fixed shape that stretches outwards to wraparound your smartphone, the ROG Tessen folds as well.
It’s an ingenious solution to the bulkiness problem other models face, but it’s not perfect. ASUS has made several compromises with the ROG Tessen, and price wasn’t one of them.
So, does this compact controller pack enough punch to justify its price tag? Or is it just a fancy gimmick? Let's find out.
What is the ASUS ROG Tessen offering?
ASUS’s Republic of Gamers brand – or ROG – is designed to meet the exacting demands of gamers.
The ROG Tessen is a unique take on bringing the ROG ethos to mobile gaming controllers. Its folding design is the relabelling point, allowing you to shrink the controller down to a more convenient size for slipping into a bag or a large pocket.
Connecting to your phone directly via USB-C, the Tessen ensures a lag-free, responsive gaming experience. This is a big plus for gamers who demand precision and speed, especially in fast-paced titles. The design also considers the reality of phone cases, allowing you to connect your device without having to remove it. This is a small but significant detail that many other controllers overlook.
Aside from the folding design, the biggest selling point here is the exceptional build quality. The Tessen has a robust feel that inspires confidence. You can tell that ASUS hasn't skimped on materials or construction. The buttons and triggers have a satisfying tactile response, and the analogue sticks are smooth and precise.
The Tessen also boasts two programmable aluminium rear paddles. While most controllers I’ve tested offer some form of rear or shoulder buttons, the Tessen’s paddles are more like the paddle shift on expensive cars. While few of the games I play have any need of them, they feel satisfying to press, and the craftsmanship is fantastic.
The Tessen offers 18W pass-through charging, you can keep your phone juiced up during extended gaming sessions, ensuring that you're never caught short on battery.
And because this is a ROG product, it’s important to call out the Aura RGB lighting. It's subtle, adding a touch of personality to your gaming setup without being too flashy. You can customise the lighting effects through the ASUS Armoury Crate app, allowing you to match it to your personal style.

What does the ASUS ROG Tessen do well?
The Tessen truly shines in its portability and build quality. The folding design is stunning, making it simple to take with you wherever you go, though I have to say it’s not elegant when folded. It would probably be better if it came with a case for transporting while folded.
Having tested both USB-C and wireless Bluetooth gaming controllers, I have a definite preference for the hard connection. The fact you don’t need to charge the controller to use it makes it a lot more usable, and the experience appears to be seamless and lag-free.
The responsiveness of the buttons is impeccable, and the tactile buttons and triggers offer precise control. The rear paddles are a welcome addition, giving you an edge in competitive games.
I also found that my Pixel 8 connected effortlessly, even with a case on. This is a big plus, as some other controllers can be quite fiddly.
The Aura RGB lighting is a nice touch, adding a bit of personality without being over the top. It’s not a reason to buy the controller, but it’s not a bad feature to have.

What could the ASUS ROG Tessen improve?
The biggest letdown with the ROG Tessen is that it only supports Android devices.
In a world where iPhones are now embracing USB-C, it's a real shame that iOS users are left out. This significantly limits the Tessen's appeal, especially for those who own both Android and iOS devices. Being able to plug the controller in to any device is important not just for the phone you have now, but also any phone you want in the future.
I also struggled with occasional incompatibility with certain games. While most titles work flawlessly, some games, like COD: Mobile, simply refuse to recognise the Tessen. From what I can tell, COD: Mobile is designed to only work with Bluetooth controllers, though I faced no issue when playing with the Razer Kishi Ultra.
And let's be honest, the Tessen is fairly pricey. You're paying a premium for that folding design and robust build. Whether it's worth the extra cost depends on your budget and how much you value portability.
While the Armoury Crate app is generally good, it can be a bit clunky at times. Navigating the menus and customising settings can be a bit of a chore.

Verdict
The ASUS ROG Tessen is a great mobile gaming controller, especially if you're an Android user who values portability and premium build quality. Its folding design, responsive controls, and 18W pass-through charging make it a top contender for gaming on the go.
While the Android-only compatibility and occasional game compatibility issues are a big disappointment, the overall performance and portability of the Tessen are difficult to argue with.
If you're after a premium, portable Android gaming controller and don't mind paying a bit extra, the ASUS ROG Tessen is worth considering. But at the $179 RRP, just remember that you'll be missing out on some games, and that iOS users are not supported.
