DJI has been dropping hints about its new 360 FPV drone for a couple of weeks now, but the official details are now out of the bag. The new flagship DJI Avata 360 flyer delivers 8K, 360º imaging with up to 23 minutes of flight time and 42GB of on-board storage.
The biggest shift here is the move to dual 1-inch-equivalent sensors. This is a massive hardware jump from the Avata 2, allowing for 8K/60fps HDR video that should hold up far better in the harsh Australian sun or during "Golden Hour" coastal flights.
Because it captures a full 360-degree sphere, the pressure to perfectly aim the drone during a high-speed dive is gone. You can simply fly the line, then use the DJI Fly app to "reframe" the footage, choosing exactly where the camera looks after you’ve landed.
DJI has equipped the Avata 360 with its O4+ transmission system, promising a stable 1080p/60fps feed even at a distance. More importantly for local pilots, it features "nightscape" omnidirectional obstacle sensing.
This means the drone’s safety sensors are now effective in low-light conditions. It’s a feature we recently saw on the DJI Air 3S, and it makes flying through complex environments significantly less terrifying for your bank account.
FPV flying is inherently risky, but DJI is making it more consumer-friendly. The Avata 360 features a user-replaceable front lens element, meaning a minor clip against a branch doesn’t require a full service centre visit.
A DJI spokesperson said the drone is "designed to unlock endless creativity in one take," which tracks with the inclusion of 42GB of internal storage. This allows for roughly 30 minutes of 8K footage without needing to fiddle with microSD cards in the field.
The new "Virtual Gimbal" is a clever software trick that uses the 360-degree data to simulate camera tilts and pans. It allows for infinite rotation and horizons that stay level even when the drone is performing aggressive aerial acrobatics like those seen on the DJI Neo.
