Dyson has upgraded its best-selling vacuum with the V8 Cyclone
While the V16 Piston Animal may be the most powerful vacuum Dyson has ever launched, it still has time for the stick vacuum that changed

The V8 wasn't Dyson's first stick vacuum, but it was arguably its most successful. At IFA last week, the company announced it was giving the V8 a 2025 update, alongside launching the impressively specced V16 Piston Animal.
The new version, dubbed the Dyson V8 Cyclone, sees performance boosted to match that of the V10 model, while retaining the more compact build of the V8.
The V8 was – and in many regards still is – a huge success for Dyson. But it launched back in 2016, and vacuum technology has come a long way since then.
Son Dyson decided not only to improve its flagship lineup with the V16, but also spare a bit of love for its entry-level V8.
The V8 Cyclone offers a 30% increase of suction power over the previous V8 model, and double the runtime. For the spec-fans out there, that means you get 150 Air Watts of suction power, and a battery life that will clean for 60 mintes instead of 30.
But there was a lot more that needed to happen beyond just a better battery and more suction. To compete with the other leading stick vacuums on the market, Dyson made some additional changes.
Asaph Ooi, Head of Floorcare Engineering at Dyson, explained it in a presentation to media at an event in Sydney last week:
"This is an upgrade of our Dyson V8 machine. It comes with 30% more suction, so that's 150 air watts. It comes with 50% more run time, so that's 60 minutes. It also comes with an on-off button that gives you the cleaning run time and it comes with three cleaning modes."
The expansion to three cleaning modes finally caters to the imbalance of the original V8.
"So in the predecessor V8, you remember that it had only two clean modes. So there was the boost mode that [lasts] five minutes, you have a bit of runtime anxiety but good pickup performance. You then have the eco mode that's 40 minutes, however sometimes the pickup isn't good enough.
"On the Dyson V8 Cyclone, what we've done is we've introduced a third mode that's right smack in the middle. We have a mode, a medium mode, that gives a delicate balance of pickup performance and upgrades the power and suction that you get. However, it keeps the runtime to 20 to 25 minutes, depending on the clean head you're using or the attachment you're using."
The new V8 Cyclone also gets swappable battery packs, so you can quickly change and go if you have a larger home and need extra power.
For previous V8 owners, the accessories and tools of the new Cyclone version are all backwards compatible, so you can use any older attachments you have around with the newer model.
And in a tease of some future plans, Ooi hinted that there are future plans for the V8 to come within the next 12 months:
"We have further upgrades to the machine in the coming year... It isn't just an upgrade for one time only. It's not a sales thing. It is what we believe is really the best we can have on the lower price point," he said.
The new Dyson V8 Cyclone is available now for an RRP of $649. It comes with a de-tangling Motorbar, a mini motorised brush bar and a crevice tool.
