A young man waering the WF-C710N noise cancelling earbuds

Sony has always struggled with its product names. There's just nothing catchy about a pair of earbuds named "WF-C710N".

But the specs seem pretty promising, and Sony has always made really good audio products.

These earbuds use dual microphones and Sony's dual noise sensor technology to better cancel out the world around you, delivering clean, distraction free audio.

An ambient sound mode gives you the option of letting the outside world in without having to remove the earbuds. You can customise just how much ambient noise you want using Sony's Sound Connect app as well, with 20 levels to choose from.

Or, if you're lazy like me, you can opt for the Adaptive Sound Control mode, which adapts the outside noise based on your location and teh surrounding sounds.

Audio is powered by a 5mm driver, plus Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) processing for balanced audio. If you want to customise your EQ, the Sony app lets you do that too.

The WF-C710N promises up to 30 hours of battery life in the earbuds and case, and quick charging will give you an extra hour of listening from 5 minutes in the case.

Sony has used AI (of course!) to develop clear voice audio for calls, suppressing ambient noise and leveraging Precise Voice Pickup Technology to make sure your calls are clear no matter how noisy the bar you're talking in is.

The earbuds are rated  IPX4 for water resistance, and offer touch controls for easy playback control.

Pricing and availability

The WF-C710N earbuds have a suggested retail price of $189.95 AUD and are available to pre-order from today in glass blue, pink, black and white colour options.

Sony also added new colours to its WH-CH720N and WH-CH520 over ear headphones today.

In a world with Sony's WF-1000XM5 and the Apple AirPods 4, I'm interested to see if these earbuds have the goods to make our list of the best wireless earbuds. Time will tell.
