One of the earliest pioneers of the mobile phone industry, Motorola has been producing some of the best mobile phone models in the world since the mid-1990s.

With such a rich history, it's no surprise that the brand that created the DynaTAC and the MotoRAZR flip phone is still manufacturing world-class handsets for Australians today.

There are a number of great Motorola phones to choose from, which can make it difficult to know which model is right for you.

So to help, we've pulled together this guide of the best Motorola phones in Australia. If you are open to buying a phone that isn't made by Motorola, consider our guide for the best Samsung phones in Australia. We also recommend the best phones in Australia, the best Android phones, and the best camera phones.

And if you're on a budget, we also have a roundup of the best cheap phones in Australia as well.

These are the best Motorola phone models in Australia right now:

Motorola RAZR 50 Ultra

Holding the Moto RAZR 50 Ultra

Motorola's RAZR handset was a revelation when it came out in the 2000s. With the advent of folding screens, it makes sense that Motorola has brought back the iconic brand.

After a few attempts, Motorola has really managed to nail the folding phone concept with the RAZR 50 Ultra.

With its large 4-inch external display, you can easily take hands-free selfies. Unlike other flip phones, you can also use the external display for most of your Android apps, giving the phone a real versatility.

Open the phone up and you have the the stunning 6.9-inch 165Hz screen, which does have a crease, but feels much less noticeable than previous generations of foldables. The end result its one of the best foldable phones on the market right now.

This is easily my favourite phone of 2024, and while its specs mean it's probably not the best phone for most people, it did earn a BTTR Hall of Fame award.

Motorola RAZR 50 Ultra review: More than just a name
Motorola has combined elegant design, stunning displays and great cameras to create one of my favourite phones of the year.

Motorola Edge 50 Neo

It's not the cheapest model in Motorola's Edge 50 family of smartphones, but it's the most unique. The Edge 50 Neo has a smaller 6.4-inch display that still bangs out a Super HD resolution and a whopping 3,000 nits of peak brightness.

The Neo lacks the curved screen found on the other Edge 50 phones, but still has the vegan leather finish commonplace across Motorola's lineup.

Surprisingly, the Neo still features a triple camera array on the back, with a 50MP main sensor partnered with a 10MP 3x telephoto lens and a 13MP ultra-wide.

With 68W fast charging – including a charger in the box – and 15W wireless charging, there's a lot to like about the Neo. The processor does get caught chugging along from time to time, but it's still a great option for the price.

The Motorola Edge 50 Neo is the most unique of all the Edge 50 phones, and it’s all the better for it.

Motorola Edge 50 Fusion

The cameras on the Edge 50 Fusion

The Motorola Edge 50 Fusion is a compromise. You get a reasonably powerful device with a reasonable camera at a reasonable price.

But while you're definitely making sacrifices, the Edge 50 Fusion nails the balance. Everything feels more premium than it is. It has exceptional battery life, and the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 processor handled all the tasks I threw at it well.

The camera delivers well balanced photos with plenty of detail. While it doesn't compete with a flagship phone like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, it does a solid job nonetheless.

It lacks features like wireless charging and a microSD card slot, but those are small sacrifices for what is an exceptionally valued phone.

Motorola has found an exceptional balance between features and price with the Edge 50 Fusion.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro

The Moto Edge 50 Pro against a chimney

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro may not stand out on paper, but this sub-$1000 smartphone offers solid performance across the board.

The Edge 50 Fusion is undoubtedly better value, but you do get better performance out of the $999 Edge 50 Pro.

It looks and feels like a premium flagship, with its curved edges on the screen and vegan leather finish, while the inclusion of a telephoto and an ultrawide lens in addition to the 50MP main wide-angle camera makes it a versatile camera.

That camera bump does protrude a fair way and makes the phone sit a bit lopsided, which is a shame. Also of concern is just how hot the phone gets using the 125W fast charger that comes in the box.

But regardless of those features, this is still a solid device worth consideration.

Motorola Moto Edge 50 Pro review: Solid all-rounder
By being pretty good at almost everything, you can miss the fact that the Edge 50 Pro doesn’t stand out with anything.

Motorola Edge 50

When you have four very similar phones all bracketed about $100 apart, it can be a bit of a challenge to differentiate them all.

And so it is that the core Edge 50 smartphone is arguably the weakest of the all, despite featuring a good balance of features from each.

With the same triple-lens camera array as the Edge 50 Neo on board, IP68 water and dust rating and a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition processor with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB of storage running the show, there's a lot to like about the Edge 50.

But I found that there was better balance between price and performance with the other models. It's a good phone, but the other Edge 50 devices are better at different things.

The Motorola Edge 50 is a solid phone that gets lost in the crowded collection of Edge 50 variations.

Motorola g84 5G

I would consider buying the Moto g84 5G for no other reason than the stunning Viva Magenta colour and vegan leather back. For a sub-$500 it is breathtaking to look at.

It offers decent performance thanks to its Snapdragon 695 5G chip, and the 6.5-inch 2400 × 1080 FHD+ display is great for watching videos, playing games and looking at photos.

The camera of the g84 is a little underwhelming, unfortunately. While you shouldn't expect flagship camera performance at a device at this price, I still wanted a more vibrant image than what I got.

Motorola Moto G84 5G review
The Motorola G84 5G offers great performance, a nice screen and a stellar design for under $400, making it tough to beat for the budget handset.

Motorola g54 5G

The Moto g84 is a better phone than the G54, but it costs $100 more, and $100 can go a long way in 2024.

The G54 is a really nice budget handset. It has a nice, clear display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling, and really good battery life.

It also has the same vegan leather finish - though in different colours - that give it a much more premium feel than the price would suggest.

Again, the camera isn't fantastic, and there's no waterproof rating here. But the g54 is still great value, and a much better offering than the g34 5G, which is $20 cheaper but cuts out a lot more features.

Motorola Moto G54 5G review: Affordable activity
The Motorola Moto G54 strikes a fine balance between performance and affordability, with plenty of great features despite a slightly underwhelming camera.

How we chose the best Motorola phone in Australia

I've reviewed hundreds of phones over my career, and more than 30 since I launched BTTR. In that time I learned that review sites - including this one - are subjective by nature. Everybody has a different opinion of what is best.

So for this guide, I’ve recommended my top Motorola smartphone choices from the models I have tested.

As I continue to test more Motorola devices, I’ll update this guide to ensure it is regularly up to date.

What to look for when choosing the best Motorola phone in Australia

The Moto RAZR 50 Ultra folded and sitting on top of other Motorola phones

Whether you're after one of the models listed above or something completely different, the decision factors you need to consider when buying a new Motorola phone is the same.

Design

If you've already decided that you want to buy a Motorola phone, then the first question you need to answer is: "what style do you want to buy?"

Motorola has long been one of the most pioneering smartphone companies in the world. Its original RAZR was a style icon, and today its been reincarnated as a folding phone.

If you want a more traditional device, then you can exclude Moto RAZR and move on.

Performance

You need a phone that is going to be able to handle the types of tasks you want to use it for.

While it's hard to determine that before you actually use the phone, benchmark data can help act as a guide.

Here's our collecting Motorola Benchmarks since we started testing Moto phones at BTTR.

Price

Whether you opt for a foldable phone or not, the next decision factor has to be price. Decide how much you are willing to spend on your new Moto phone. Then you can find the right model in that price bracket.

Features and functions

The amount you spend will impact on the features available - more expensive devices can typically do more.

Motorola conveniently breaks down its phones into families of phones. The Moto Edge range, for example, are the company's premium range.

The RAZR family is Motorola's folding phone proposition, while the Moto G family is their general purpose range.

The Moto E family is targeted towards the cheap end of the smartphone market.

Motorola One phones were originally designed to offer solid specs on Google's Android One platform, which runs pure Android software.

Finally, Motorola has recently launched the ThinkPhone family, which is targeted towards business users with higher security needs.

Camera requirements

One of the biggest differentiators between smartphones today is the camera.

Motorola typically offers high quality cameras as part of their phones. That means you won't have to make too many decisions here. But if you want something in particular, like special night photography modes, this is the time to consider that.
