I remember the days that SIM cards were as big as your thumbnail. Today though, we have eSIMs, and they are growing in popularity. Boost Mobile has today announced it is offering its plans via eSIM in its newly updated mobile app.

eSIM, or "embedded SIM" is built directly into your phone itself. That means there's no need to go hunting for a paperclip to pop open the SIM tray when you want to update your phone or switch to a new mobile plan.

Instead, you simply download and activate the eSIM profile to your device in order to get connected.

For Boost founder Peter Adderton, the addition of eSIM to Boost's lineup will help make it easier than ever to switch providers.

"As an industry we have traditionally made it way too hard for people to port in and out. This is because having the ability to move in seconds, across multiple carriers and networks, is actually big telco’s worst fear!

"Putting up barriers between switching telco serves the company, not the consumer. eSIM changes the relationship consumers have with their telcos”, Mr Adderton said in the announcement.

According to Telsyte’s 2023 Australian Mobile Services Market Study, 46% of Aussie smartphone users have a handset that supports eSIM, but only 12% of eSIM compatible smartphone users are currently using eSIM.

While that's up 6% in the last year, having smaller MVNOs like Boost support the technology will help expand take up even faster.
