Why trust us? | How we test
I don't think we're anywhere near seeing the potential of smart rings. It's the ideal form factor for discreet health tracking, but historically the rings have still been a little bulky.
But Oura has somehow managed to reduce the size of its new Ring 5 by a whopping 40% compared to the Oura Ring 4. While that makes it the world's smallest smart ring (so far), it also highlights just how much there is still for this category to grow.
The size reduction wasn't achieved by cutting corners, either. Oura rebuilt the mechanical structure, battery, optical sensors, and signal architecture from scratch.
The result is a ring that's thinner, lighter, and more curved, with 12 stronger signal pathways, precision-engineered sensor domes for better skin contact, and more powerful LEDs. Oura says this delivers greater accuracy across more finger types and skin tones than any previous generation.
Ring 5 comes in sizes 6 to 13 in six different finishes, including a redesigned Gold in a lighter, more contemporary shade, and a new Deep Rose with a rich copper-rose tone.
Oura says it's teh company's most scratch-resistant ring yet, thanks to an extra-strong physical vapour deposition coating, and it's rated IP68 for dust and water resistance down to 100 metres.
On the software side, Oura is launching live activity tracking, letting you follow pace, distance, and heart rate in real time during runs, rides, and gym sessions.
There's also a new Locate feature to help you track down a misplaced ring or the new Charging Case, a compact aluminium accessory that stores a month's worth of battery and supports wireless charging.
The biggest software news is in women's health. Oura is introducing Menopause Insights, centred on the Menopause Impact Scale, a proprietary clinical questionnaire that measures how perimenopause affects daily life across sleep, mood, cognition, and daily function.
There's also a new Hormonal Birth Control feature that adapts Cycle Insights for women using pills, patches, IUDs, and other hormonal methods, offering insight into how contraception influences their biometrics over time.
Oura chief executive Tom Hale said the ring is designed to reach a broader audience. "By reimagining Oura Ring 5 to be smaller, easier to wear, and pairing it with our most advanced software yet, we're making it possible for many more people to wear Oura every day."

It's definitely a key time for smart rings to shine, with Oura up against Ultrahuman and Samsung with the compact wearables. I'll be testing the Oura 5 soon, so stay tuned for more hands on experience to come.
