The stars never quite aligned for me to get extended testing time with the ROG Ally or Ally X portable gaming handhelds. But with the announcement of the X20 Bundle at Computex this week, maybe that's for the best.
If I can get my hands on this one for proper testing, I'll get to enjoy all the benefits with fresh eyes (and hands).
ASUS has revealed the ROG XBOX Ally X20 Bundle, a 20th-anniversary special edition of its Windows handheld that brings several significant upgrades, including the first-ever OLED panel to grace an Ally. Its translucent black chassis with gold internal structure is nice and striking, too.
The new 7.4-inch Nebula HDR Display is a proper OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1,400 nits of peak brightness, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1000 certification, and full Dolby Vision support.
A 0.2ms response time and FreeSync Premium Pro round out what looks like a serious upgrade over the LCD panels in previous Ally models.
Corning DXC anti-reflective glass reduces glare by 65%, which matters when you're gaming on the go in less-than-ideal lighting.
Because OLED panels run hotter than LCDs, ASUS has redesigned the thermal solution to channel more airflow to the APU and keep display surface temperatures in check.
Control gets an upgrade too. The Ally X20 swaps in TMR joystick technology, which ASUS says delivers better precision than Hall effect sensors and is designed to eliminate drift entirely.
The D-pad is transforming, converting between four-way and eight-way inputs, and the face buttons now sit flush with the chassis for smoother thumb movement. Rubberised rear grips complete the ergonomic rework.
Under the hood, the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor drives the show, backed by 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 RAM and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.
The Ally X20 also supports Auto SR, AMD's AI upscaling tool previously limited to Copilot+ PCs, which lets you dock the handheld to a TV without tanking frame rates.
The bundle pairs the handheld with the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses. These connect via a single USB-C cable and project a virtual 171-inch screen at a simulated four metres, with a 240Hz micro-OLED display and 0.01ms response time.
Native 3DoF tracking means the screen moves with your head, while Anchor Mode locks it in place. Both devices share the black-and-gold 20th-anniversary colorway.

Pricing and availability
Australian pricing and a local release date for the ROG XBOX Ally X20 Bundle have not yet been confirmed, though I'll be sure to update when I hear more.
