Sony's RX10 V packs Alpha smarts into one very long lens

The fifth-generation Sony RX10 V all-in-one superzoom pairs a 25x ZEISS lens with Alpha-grade autofocus and 30fps bursts, and it's landing in Australia this month for $3,499.

Smartphones today do a pretty impressive job of high-impact zoom. Using the S26 Ultra earlier this year at a Matildas match let me get up close and personal on the phone, but it was still a digital zoom that left me with a fair amount of noise and artefacts.

If you want clarity in your zoom, you still need a camera, and Sony has just announced its latest version of the RX10 all-in-one camera series. With an impressive 25x optical zoom, the fifth generation camera offers blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 fps, plus AI-powered Real-time Recognition AF for accurate subject recognition.

At the core of the camera is a 24-600mm ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* lens. One fixed lens, one body, and you've covered everything from a wide group shot to a bird on a distant branch, without swapping glass or lugging a camera bag full of it. The F2.4-4.0 aperture also means you can pull focus off the background for a proper bokeh look, something phone cameras still fake with software.

The autofocus is where Sony has clearly borrowed from its Alpha mirrorless line, the same system behind cameras like the recently launched Alpha 7R VI. It recognises people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and planes on its own, and it can track a person even when they turn away or put on a helmet.

Sony has also carried over the Alpha's button layout and grip, so if you've used one of its mirrorless bodies before, the RX10 V should feel familiar in your hands. Battery life is up too, good for around 630 shots, roughly 50 percent more than the previous model.

On video, the RX10 V shoots 4K at 120p with slow motion up to 5x, and includes S-Cinetone and S-Log3 profiles for anyone who wants more control in the edit.

"The RX10 series is renowned for its versatility thanks to its all-in-one form factor partnered with the integrated 24-600mm lens. In the RX10 V, we're introducing features and technologies from our Alpha lineup, further strengthening its position as an outstanding choice for passionate shooters looking for performance, portability and creative flexibility," said Jun Yoon, Head of Digital Imaging, Sony Australia & New Zealand.
