It's amazing how far the Australian broadband scene has come in the past 10 years.

10 years ago I joined Finder to head up the NBN comparison platform. The NBN rollout was ongoing, but personally I was still stuck on ADSL2+, and even if you were lucky enough to get the NBN, you were stuck at 100Mbps max.

Today though, not only have the speeds improved dramatically and the NBN rollout complete, but the ISPs offering the best performance are all different. Take the news today that Superloop has been named the fastest fixed network in Australia for the third period in a row.

Ookla's Speedtest Award for the first half of 2026 covers testing from 1 January to 30 June, and it extends a run that stretches back across the whole of 2025. That makes Superloop the only Australian provider to hold the title for three consecutive six month periods.

The award is based on Ookla analysing millions of consumer-initiated speed tests around the country, with each provider scored on throughput and responsiveness.

That means download and upload speeds combined with latency, rather than just the download number.

"We've invested meaningfully in our network, and three consecutive Ookla Speedtest Awards tells us that investment is delivering for homes, businesses and enterprise customers right across the country," Superloop CEO Paul Tyler said.

It's not the only recognition Superloop has picked up lately either. In the past six months alone, it's been named NBN Provider of the Year at Finder's Broadband Awards, picked up a Canstar award for its high speed NBN plan, collected multiple honours at the 2026 WeMoney Telco & Broadband Awards, earned a nod from TechRadar for its gaming network, and holds a Top Rated Provider badge on ProductReview.com.au from more than 11,000 customer reviews.

Behind the results is Superloop's Infrastructure-on-Demand platform, which spans fibre, fixed wireless and subsea cable assets. That's also the engine behind challenger brands like Exetel, which draw on the same network to compete for a larger slice of the market.

For anyone still shopping around, it's a reminder that the fastest name on the market shifts more often than you'd think, and it pays to check current rankings rather than assume the same provider tops the list year after year.
