The Stockman is Chery's bid to make diesel hybrids the smart choice for ute buyers

Chery has previewed the full specs of its diesel plug-in hybrid ute ahead of a Q4 2026 Australian launch, and the numbers suggest it's coming for the ute segment's biggest names.

Chery has dumped the spec sheet of its upcoming diesel hybrid ute, the Stockman. And it's shaping up to be a bit of a beast on the roads.

The Stockman pairs a 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine with Chery's Super Hybrid System. That means combined output sits at 350kW and 800Nm, numbers that put it among the most powerful electrified utes you'll be able to buy in Australia.

The hybrid system gives the Stockman up to 100km of electric only driving range (NEDC, so treat it as a best case figure), which means plenty of owners could handle the daily commute without the diesel engine kicking in at all.

Towing is where dual-cab buyers tend to make or break a decision, and Chery's covered that base too. The Stockman is rated for 3,500 kg braked towing, backed by a chassis built around double wishbone front suspension and heavy duty rear leaf springs.

Four-wheel drive is standard, as are all-terrain tyres, and ground clearance comes in at 247mm, so it can actually handle off-road duties rather than just looking the part.

Size wise, it's a proper full sized ute. The Stockman measures 5,450mm long, 2,010mm wide and 1,890mm high on a 3,250mm wheelbase, with a cargo tub measuring 1,560mm by 1,560mm by 500mm for tools, gear or whatever the weekend demands.

Lucas Harris, Chief Operating Officer at Chery Australia, said the Stockman was designed to give buyers options depending on how they use it.

"The Stockman represents Chery's vision for the next generation of dual-cab utes, combining exceptional performance with impressive efficiency and genuine capability. Offering both petrol and diesel plug-in hybrid options allows us to cater for customer demands, be it off-road performance or a more urban focus," he said.

A petrol variant is also on the way, though that won't arrive until next year. For now, it's the diesel Super Hybrid leading the charge.

Pricing and availability

Chery hasn't locked in pricing or model grades for the Stockman just yet, with those details promised closer to launch.

What we do know is that the diesel Super Hybrid variant will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2026, with a petrol powered variant joining the range in 2027.
