Robot lawnmowers are going to be the next big product in Australia.
They aren't new, at all. I reviewed my first robot mower back in 2014. But this year, it feels like things have taken a bold leap forward.
Firstly, they are everywhere. A few weeks back I flew to China to see where Ecovacs makes their robots, and this week both MOVA and Roborock have confirmed their new robot lawnmower products.
There are models from brands you know, like Husqvarna, Worx Landroid, Gardena and Segway. And then there are the new, smaller brands you've never heard of, trying to compete in a rapidly evolving market.
One of the things that has struck me as I've seen all these models appear is that the tech – while solid and certainly good enough to mow your lawn today – still has so much potential to get better.
Edges feel like the obvious first step, and some models have even tried. But there's also capacity to improve the speed as well as other lawncare elements, like feeding the grass and weed spraying.
Maybe I'm overly optimistic. But having watched a robot mow my lawn for the past week, I've gotta say, it's a brave new world out there!
Until next week
