Pantalones Reposado tequila review: Alright, Alright, All Right

I haven't drunk tequila in 20 years since a rough night in my twenties. So when a bottle of Matthew McConaughey's Pantalones Reposado arrived, I wasn't expecting much. It turns out I might have been wrong about tequila this whole time.

Quick Verdict

Pantalones Reposado is a smooth, easy-drinking tequila that won over someone with two decades of tequila-related trauma. The vanilla and caramel sweetness makes it far more approachable than the tequila I remembered from my twenties, with just enough cinnamon and warmth on the finish to remind you it's still tequila. It's a solid mid-range option, even if the McConaughey factor threatens to overshadow the liquid itself.

Pros
  • Genuinely smooth and easy to drink neat, even for tequila skeptics
  • Sweet vanilla and caramel character makes it approachable without tasting artificial
  • 100% organic Blue Weber agave from fourth-generation Mexican farmers
Cons
  • Quite sweet, with more vanilla and caramel than traditional agave bite, though that made it easier for this tequila novice to enjoy
RRP: From $119

Like many young Aussie men, I may have enjoyed tequila a little too hard, too fast and too heavily when I was young. After a particularly nasty evening, I found the smell kicked my gag reflex, and for over 20 years I’ve not touched it.

Until now, that is. I received a bottle of Pantalones Reposado tequila to review, and with some trepidation, I cracked the bottle.

Nobody is more surprised than me that the smell of this tequila didn’t make me sick. But even more surprising is how much I actually enjoyed it.

What makes Pantalones Reposado Tequila stand out?

While it does detract from the tequila itself, the most interesting fact about this spirit is that it comes from acclaimed actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves.

The pair launched the Pantalones brand in October 2023, and it made its way to Australian shores in March 2025.

McConaughey is a renowned environmentalist, so it’s hardly a surprise that Pantalones is a made with 100% organically grown Blue Weber Agave grown by fourth generation farmers.

The agave is then slow cooked before fermentation and distillation.

There are three different Pantalones bottles available. Blanco is bottled straight from distillation, while Reposado is aged in American Oak barrels for 9 months, and Añejo gets 15 months in the American Oak before bottling.

I tried out the Reposado for this review.

Appearance

Housed in a wide, rectangular bottle with rounded edges, Pantalones looks like a premium experience from the get-go. The glass is solid, and the plastic cork on top feel tight and secure, with a cord of leather wrapped through the bottle’s top for that rustic, country feel.

Embossed on the front of the bottle above the label is what looks like a rising sun over a pair of pants. Given “Pantalones” means pants, that’s not too much of a surprise, apart from the fact that McConaughey obviously has a sense of humour.

The Reposado is a light, golden yellow in colour, picking that up from the oak barrel ageing process. The tequila is bright and clean, promising the same when it comes to taste.

Pour it into a glass, and the tequila looks light and appetising. It swirls around nicely, not too thin and ready for tasting.

Taste

Given it’s been over 20 years since I last tried tequila (at least, not mixed in to a cocktail of some kind), my memory of the spirit seems misguided. I remember it smelling harsh and strong, promising the burn before the liquid even touched your lips.

The Pantalones is not like that at all. The nose is light and sweet, with hints of vanilla and maybe a bit of caramel. There’s a bit of spice there too, but hidden behind the bolder, sweeter scents.

Pop the Reposado to your lips and you get those same flavours come through. There’s a clear vanilla presence, sweeter than I expected from a tequila, making it easier to drink on its own than my younger self would ever have believed was possible.

There’s still that familiar tequila burn at the end. It’s warm, but smooth, with a touch of cinnamon hinted at the close.

As the finish died down, I found myself reaching for more instead of coughing relentlessly.

Beyond drinking the Pantalones straight or on ice, I also tried it in a basic Tequila Sunrise, though I actually preferred it in its more natural form. I’m keen to experiment with a few more cocktails, but the home bar isn’t stocked overly well at the moment.

A tequila sunrise made with Pantalones. It was sweet.

Verdict

If I’d not received McConaughey’s Pantalones tequila to review, I likely would have spent the rest of my life thinking tequila in general was a taste my body had trained itself to reject.

But the Pantalones is mellow. It’s smooth, kind of like McConaughey himself. Fortunately, it doesn’t taste like pants.

Like any good spirits, people who know a drink know it well. They understand the nuance of flavours available.

I’m not that guy with tequila. But if I’d been drinking Pantalones 20 years ago, I reckon maybe I would be.

Buy the Pantalones Reposado Tequila if:

  • You've been burned by tequila before. If your only reference point is tequila slammers that ended badly, this is a different experience. The vanilla and caramel sweetness makes it easy to sip neat or on ice without the harsh burn you might be bracing for.
  • You want something you can drink slowly, not just shoot. Nine months in American oak gives it enough smoothness to work as a sipper, not just a mixer you knock back and chase with lemon.
  • You care about how your spirits are made. It's certified organic, made from 100% Blue Weber agave sourced from fourth-generation farmers, so there's substance behind the branding if that matters to you.

Skip the Pantalones Reposado Tequila if:

  • You're after a traditional, agave-forward reposado. The oak and vanilla take the lead here, so if you want a tequila that tastes unmistakably of roasted agave first and barrel second, look elsewhere.
  • You're not keen on paying a celebrity premium. At $121.99, you're partly paying for the McConaughey name, and there are reposados at similar or lower price points with more traditional character.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Pantalones Reposado tequila taste like?

Expect vanilla and caramel up front, both on the nose and the palate, with a touch of cinnamon and spice coming through on the finish. It's quite sweet, which makes it easy drinking, though it means the traditional cooked agave character sits more in the background than the foreground.

Is Pantalones Reposado good to drink neat, or only in cocktails?

It holds up well neat or on ice. The nine months in American oak barrels smooths out the harsher edges you'd get from a younger tequila, so you don't need to hide it behind mixers. It also works fine in something simple like a Tequila Sunrise if you'd rather mix it.

How is Pantalones Reposado different from the Blanco and Añejo?

All three start from the same 100% organic Blue Weber agave, but the ageing changes the flavour. Blanco is bottled straight after distillation with no barrel time, so it leans to citrus and pepper. Reposado spends nine months in American oak whisky barrels, picking up the vanilla, caramel, and spice notes. Añejo goes in for 15 months, pushing further into butterscotch and brown sugar territory.

Who makes Pantalones tequila?

Pantalones was founded by actor Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, launching in the US in October 2023 before arriving in Australia in March 2025. The tequila itself is produced by Tequilera TAP in Amatitán, Jalisco.

Where is Pantalones tequila made?

It's distilled in the lowlands of Jalisco, Mexico, in the town of Amatitán, using organically grown Blue Weber agave from family-owned farms across the region.
