One of the biggest challenges with in-home Wi-Fi isn't the NBN, it's your Wi-Fi setup. Upgrading to a solid mesh system is a great way to address a lot of those issues with coverage and performance.
D-Link is trying to help on that front with the launch of its latest mesh system. Catchily named "DPN-BE7212GR BE7200 10G Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Router", this thing is designed to give you better performance from your internet connection.
NBN now offers 1Gbps and 2Gbps plans, but most routers can't keep up with that on either side of the connection.
D-Link's fix is a router with a 10 Gigabit WAN port and a dedicated 10 Gigabit LAN port, wrapped around Wi-Fi 7 for the rest of the home. D-Link A/NZ managing director Graeme Reardon said the shift in bottleneck is exactly what prompted the design.
"For years, the broadband connection was the bottleneck in most homes. With NBN now scaling to 2Gbps and NZ homes already past that on Hyperfibre, the bottleneck has moved to the router on the shelf. The DPN-BE7212GR is built to remove it: 10 Gigabit in, 10 Gigabit out and Wi-Fi 7 that grows with the home, room by room," Reardon said.
That dedicated 10 Gigabit LAN port is rare on consumer routers, and it means a 10 Gbps NAS, a multi-gig switch for a home office setup, or a wired gaming PC can all get full-speed access without a workaround.
On the wireless side, Wi-Fi 7 brings 4x4 MU-MIMO, OFDMA and 4K QAM modulation, which in plain terms means more devices can share the network without everything slowing down.
Combined dual-band speeds reach BE7200 class, with up to 1376 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and up to 5764 Mbps on 5 GHz. Multi-Link Operation lets compatible devices use both bands at once, which should help keep video calls and online gaming steady even when the network's busy.
For bigger homes, the DPN-BE7212GR is sold as a single unit but scales through EasyMesh. Add more units and you get one Wi-Fi 7 network name with seamless roaming between rooms, and each extra unit brings its own 10 Gigabit WAN, 10 Gigabit LAN, four Gigabit LAN ports and USB 3.0.
Households chasing the fastest possible speeds between rooms can also wire the units together with a 10 Gigabit Ethernet backhaul, turning the whole setup into a genuine 10 Gbps backbone rather than relying on wireless alone.
Security is handled through WPA3 encryption, a guest network for visitors, and parental controls for scheduling online time.
The D-Link Wi-Fi Assist app (iOS and Android) manages setup and day-to-day admin.
There's also a Smart VPN feature built in, letting devices on the home network reach a remote VPN server without installing separate VPN software on each one, while everyday browsing stays on the regular connection.
