Why trust us? | How we test
I hate the feeling of knowing a major appliance is on its last legs. My clothes dryer has been that way for years now, requiring careful loading and a hard whack on the side to get started. Part of me wonders if I'd just be better off replacing it with a super-energy efficient model like this new lineup from Midea.
The company has just expanded its Australian laundry range with the Midea 210 Front Load Washer and Midea 210 Heat Pump Dryer.
Given 39% of Australians are now only running cold washes and a quarter are line-drying to save money, Midea's pitch to improve cleaning without increasing costs makes sense..
The washer runs on a BLDC inverter motor, meaning it's quieter and more efficient than motors in older machines. It also uses Power Mix technology, pre-mixing detergent with water before it hits the drum so the wash gets a head start on breaking down dirt and stains.

The dryer is the real energy story here. It's rated 10 stars on the Australian energy scale, which is about as good as it gets for a home dryer.
It uses a heat pump system instead of a traditional heating element, drying clothes at lower temperatures to protect fabrics while using less electricity. Midea says it'll dry a 3kg load in 59 minutes.
Both machines talk to each other, too. The dryer's AutoLink feature reads what wash cycle you've just run and matches its drying mode to suit, so you're not stuck guessing which setting to use.
"Energy efficiency and rising living costs are top-of-mind for Australian households right now, which is why we've equipped our new laundry range with industry-leading energy efficiency and fantastic cleaning functionality," said Christie Yuen, Head of Marketing for Midea ANZ. "Midea's new laundry range is designed to make modern living easier, quieter and more energy efficient, helping families significantly reduce power consumption without compromising on premium garment care."
The new features
The washer features an Auto-Dispenser, which senses the weight of your laundry and doses detergent accordingly through the Midea Smarthome app. It'll even send you a nudge when you're running low.
There's also a Turbo Wash mode that claims to cut washing time by 30%, and a 15-minute Fast Cycle for anyone who's ever needed one item cleaned in a hurry.
On the cleaning side, a 365mm drum, five different water flow modes and a Low Profile Wave Impeller are meant to work together for a deeper clean using less water.
The washer also self-cleans with 90°C hot water flushes between the inner and outer drums, which Midea claims eliminates 99.99% of bacteria.
The dryer, meanwhile, self-cleans its own lint condenser using collected water, has a reversible door for tight laundry spaces, and runs an anti-crease cycle after drying so you're not ironing out wrinkles before work.
