Surprising absolutely nobody, Apple has stuffed the M4 processor into the Macbook Pro.

Apple's MacBook Pro gets the M4, too

After announcing the M4 iMac and the M4 Mac Mini this week, two things have become crystal clear: Apple is pretty damned good at PR to get away with drip-feeding us product announcements like this; and it was inevitable that the MacBook Pro would get the M4 update this week too.

Both the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are already some of the best laptops you can buy, so it's not really a surprise that most of the improvements here are all around the M4 upgrade.

There is a tweak to the webcam, which now offers the 12MP Center Stage camera like the M4 iMac, and a brighter display to make it easier to view in direct sunlight.

But the biggest development is the addition of the M4 chip. And unlike the iMac or Mac Mini, the 14-inch MacBook Pro offers the choice of not just the M4 and M4 Pro chip, but also the addition of the M4 Max chip.

Here are the M4 chip options for the MacBook Pro:

Chip CPU GPU Neural Engine Memory Bandwidth
Apple M4 10-core (4 performance, 6 efficiency) 10-core 16-core 120GB/s
Apple M4 Pro 12-core (8 performance, 4 efficiency) 16-core 16-core 273GB/s
Apple M4 Pro 14-core (10 performance, 4 efficiency) 20-core 16-core 273GB/s
Apple M4 Max 14-core (10 performance, 4 efficiency) 32-core 16-core 410GB/s
Apple M4 Max 16-core (10 performance, 6 efficiency) 40-core 16-core 546GB/s

If you opt for the M4 Pro or M4 Max version of the laptop, Apple's boosted the USB-C port to Thunderbolt 5, which supports transfer speeds of up to 80Gbps.

Apple's big push to unveil the M4 in every product lineup this week is very much about prepping its Macs for Apple Intelligence.

While I still don't feel Apple Intelligence is going to really do much for regular people, it's going to become pivotal for Apple's marketing. And given how easily Apple made me write three different news stories in three days, I guess I should resign myself to a future overwhelmed with dubious "AI" features.
