Normally, companies don't improve a product – they replace it with an even better product. It's not the iPhone 16 2nd generation – it's the iPhone 17, right?

But sometimes a product is so good, it just needs a few tweaks to make it even better. Automatic coffee machine masters JURA have taken that approach with the iconic Z10, launching a second generation of the product into Australia this week.

This beast of a sequel can make 51 different speciality coffees, up from the original Z10's 32.

JURA has organised all of those drinks into four colour-coded "Worlds of Coffee": Hot for rich, full-bodied classics; Cold for smooth Cold Brew creations; Light for milder, more delicate profiles; and Sweet for indulgent drinks made with flavoured milk foam.

That "Sweet" world is where things get interesting. The Z10 2nd Gen ships with a new chocolate attachment, letting you make mocaccino and hot chocolate directly from the machine.

One of my challenges with automatic machines in the past is the difficulty in making hot chocolate for the kids, so this is the kind of addition that turns a coffee machine into a full café experience.

The "Light" world is equally compelling. It's designed for people who find traditional espresso-based drinks a bit full-on, offering softer flavour profiles that highlight subtle aromas without the intensity.

JURA has also added the long black to the lineup, which is a welcome nod to Australian coffee culture. As someone trying to cut back on my dairy consumption, I appreciate the inclusion.

Smart features that make a real difference

Beyond the expanded drink menu, the Z10 2nd Generation introduces a "smart quartet" of features that address some of the real-world friction of owning a premium coffee machine.

The Coffee Timer, accessed through the J.O.E. app, lets you schedule a brew before you've even gotten out of bed. The Caffeine Regulator lets you adjust your caffeine intake across three levels, which is useful whether you're cutting back or just don't want to be wired at 3pm. The Milk Assistant walks you through cleaning and lactose-free preparation, and the Quality Assistant keeps tabs on maintenance so the machine stays in top shape over time.

At the heart of every cup is the P.R.G.2+ precision grinder, which automatically adjusts grind size and quantity based on what you're making. Fine for espresso, coarser for Cold Brew and longer drinks. After each brew it resets, which JURA says helps maintain consistency and long-term durability.

The machine also uses five distinct brewing processes to optimise flavour across all drink types, a level of engineering that's reflected in both the quality of the output and, yes, the price.

A machine that looks as good as it tastes

The Z10 2nd Generation keeps JURA's signature design language. The wave-design water tank, convex-concave front panel, and outward-curving control surface all return, now paired with a 4.3-inch colour touchscreen that brings the four coffee worlds to life.

Swipe left and right to move between categories, and tap to select your drink – it promises to be intuitive once you get a feel for it.

You can store up to four personal profiles, so different members of the household can each have the machine set up exactly how they like it.

There's also an Easy Mode for anyone who just wants to press a button and get a coffee without fiddling with settings mid-cycle.

Pricing and availability

The JURA Z10 2nd Generation is available now from David Jones, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, and JB Hi-Fi, with a recommended retail price of $4,990.

Yes, that's a significant investment. But if you're the kind of household that spends $12 a day at a café, the maths starts to look more reasonable pretty quickly. Plus, you get hot chocolate on demand as a bonus.
