It's only been six months or so since I reviewed the DJI Osmo Mobile 8, which was an exceptional phone gimbal that introduced subject tracking across apps.
DJI has announced its flagship successor, the Osmo Mobile 8P, which improves the tracking performance for every type of subject.
It has also included the Osmo FrameTap, a detachable remote with a screen that mirrors your smartphone view. A joystick gives precise control over the gimbal's movement and zoom, and you can adjust the fill light on the new Multifunctional Module 2 across eight brightness and temperature levels.
The magnetic design snaps on and off quickly, so it doesn't get in the way when you don't need it.
The new Multifunctional Module 2 goes beyond people and pets when it comes to subject-tracking, extending to general objects like cars and landmarks.
ActiveTrack 8.0, used through the DJI Mimo app, is tuned for busy environments like concerts and sporting events, handling fast movements and sudden obstructions more reliably than before.
iPhone users can also track subjects natively through their camera app via Apple DockKit, skipping the Mimo app entirely for simpler shoots.
The gimbal uses DJI's eighth-generation stabilisation and weighs approximately 386g.
The built-in tripod has been updated with a wider stance for better stability on uneven surfaces, and a 215mm extension rod is included.
Battery life is rated at up to 10 hours, and the USB-C port doubles as a phone charger for extended outdoor sessions or live streams.
The DJI Mimo app includes several creative modes worth knowing about. DynamicZoom delivers the Hitchcock dolly-zoom effect, Slow Shutter captures light trails, Action Shot keeps fast-moving subjects centred, and Widescreen mode records natively in 2.35:1 for a cinematic look without any post-production cropping.
The 360° Infinite Spin allows unlimited horizontal rotation for panoramic capture, and tilting the pan axis forward enables low-angle perspectives at ground level.
